What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is a form of nose reshaping operation that is used to either produce a larger nose in a procedure known as reduction rhinoplasty or to give a nose more bulk in a procedure known as augmentation rhinoplasty.
There are several different terms that are used to describe the same thing these include:
- Nose job
- Nose reconstruction
- Nose surgery
- Nose correction
- Nose alteration
- Nose reshaping
- Nose reduction
- Nose augmentation
Despite the different names they all relate to the same procedure.
When you go for the surgery you will first meet the surgeon who is carrying out your operation to discuss important aspects with regard to your care. This meeting will be primarily designed to ensure that your individual needs are met.
Types of Rhinoplasty Surgery
There are 3 main types of nose jobs that fall into the augmentation and reduction categories:
Standard rhinoplasty: This surgery includes full nose correction of the tip, bridge and nostrils (alar bases).
Septo-rhinoplasty: This surgery includes full nose correction and also includes alteration of the the cartilage partition in the nose (deviated nasal septum).Rhino-tip: This surgery includes the correction of the nose tip and nostrils.
About Your Procedure
By the time you reach the age of 16 your nose will generally be fully developed, the shape and size of which will primarily have been inherited from the genes passed on by your parents.
The reasons for deciding to undergo rhinoplasty surgery can be numerous whether and can range from wanting to repair damage caused by an injury or for personal cosmetic reasons.
Before you meet with a rhinoplasty surgeon it is important to have clearly decided what exactly you don’t like about your nose and how exactly you want it to change. Every aspect of your nose can be customised to your specification, this includes the nostrils, the size and the shape of every part from the bridge to the tip.
Cost of Rhinoplasty Surgery in the UK
How much does Rhinoplasty surgery cost in the UK - if your procedure is for purely medical reasons then the cost of surgery may be covered by the NHS. However if you are looking for a nose job for cosmetic reasons then you will have to pay for it privately. The average cost of a nose job in the UK carried out on a private basis is between £3,000 and £6,000.
This fee will include the cost of your treatment which includes hospital charges and surgeon fees together with follow up consultation fees. These costs will vary depending on where the clinic is based and on the surgeon who is carrying out your procedure not to mention the nature of the procedure that you are having. When you go for your initial consultation with your rhinoplasty surgeon a fixed price will normally be agreed.
You shouldn't base your decision on whether to have surgery on the cost alone, there are other very important factors to consider including the standard of the clinic or hospital and the experience and expertise of the surgeon who will be carrying out your operation.

Will there be any scarring after the procedure?
The majority of procedures leave no visible scarring in the long term, most incisions are made inside the nostrils to help to conceal any scarring.
How long is the recovery time?
Individual healing times determine the speed at which you will recover after your nose job. In the majority of cases patients will recover after between 10 and 14 days to a sufficient extent that they are able to go back to work or to resume their usual daily routines. It is often advisable to restrict more physical activities until several weeks after the procedure.
How will I feel immediately after surgery?
As with any medical surgery there will be some initial discomfort during the healing process, but this can easily be controlled through the use of pain killers which can be prescribed by your GP.
